Tessy Plastics (Skaneateles, N.Y.) said it has expanded the cleanrooms in two manufacturing facilities in Skaneateles and Elbridge, N.Y. to accommodate new medical device business.
Tessy’s Skaneateles headquarters had 21,000 square feet of ISO Class 8 cleanroom space when the company bought the building in 2015. The company decided to rearrange the building’s layout to add 15,000 square feet to the cleanroom, according to Joe Raffa, vice president and general manager. (Tessy is exhibiting this week at MD&M East, Booth #839.)
“It has been the plan all along to utilize the entire area,” Raffa said in a news release. “We recently have been awarded new production lines that will utilize about 10% of the newly constructed cleanroom space. After the room is completed, it will be used to produce surgical components for medical devices and for additional programs in the future.”
Tessy also recently purchased NuTec Tooling Systems (Meadville, Pa.) and Custom Tool & Design (Erie, Pa.). Terms were not disclosed. Tessy and NuTec had been business partners for more than 15 years. The NuTec acquisition will increase customer support with state-of-the-art custom robotic and assembly solutions. Tessy will maintain the 62 jobs in Meadville.
“Having our own automation shop will allow for more efficient production, innovation, and detailed quality control,” said Tessy president Roland Beck in a news release. “We are very excited to work with NuTec and look forward to upcoming projects.”
Custom Tool & Design (CTD) is a full-scale injection mold manufacturer founded in 1971. The company designs and builds high-volume plastic injection molds for consumer products and medical markets.
“CTD will allow Tessy to expand our expertise in tool manufacturing and supply highly technical injection molds directly to our customers,” said Stafford Frearson, Tessy’s vice president of engineering. “We will be able to improve our costs, shorten our lead-times, and enhance our production support to our customers.”
