A Kiosk for Your Prescriptions

May 6, 2019 By Baylor Scott and White Health

Baylor Scott & White Health now offers a new, more convenient prescription pickup option for patients. Baylor Scott & White Pharmacy kiosks, which are located on medical centers throughout the healthcare system’s service area, are now being installed offsite to make filling prescriptions easier for more patients.

“As we continue to increase access to quality care throughout the state, it is important that we make it easier for patients to follow their treatment plan,” said John McWhorter, COO, Baylor Scott & White Health. “These convenient pickup kiosks are offered in addition to the pharmacy delivery service we are piloting in some of our markets. This continuous evaluation of opportunities to make healthcare more convenient is part of our commitment to the communities we serve.”

The first remote kiosk of its kind in Texas was installed on the campus of the Texas Farm Bureau Headquarters in Waco last month, and more kiosks will be installed in the coming months.

“This pioneering prescription delivery by Baylor Scott & White is a great addition to our ongoing wellness program,” said TFB Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer, Si Cook. “The health, safety and wellness of our employees will always be a top priority for us. Baylor Scott & White has been a great service provider, with an onsite clinic and now this prescription service.”

There are several advantages for consumers using Baylor Scott & White Pharmacy kiosks:

  • All prescriptions can be filled
  • Prescriptions are available at the kiosk within hours of pharmacy receipt and can be picked up 24-hours a day
  • Pharmacist consultations are available via phone or video 24-hours a day
  • The kiosks are able to maintain the medications’ efficacy during storage

New Service Offered After Successful Pilot

In 2017, Baylor Scott & White Pharmacy, under the approval of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, began a demonstration project to evaluate an automated prescription pickup system.  After a year of evaluation, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy approved new rules that took effect June 2018 allowing Texas pharmacies to deliver medications outside of retail pharmacy locations via a kiosk.  To date, Baylor Scott & White hosts the most remote prescription pickup locations in Texas available to the public.

“We are excited by the success of the pilot and to now be able to introduce this convenient option to more of the communities we serve,” said Tammy Cohen, vice president of pharmacy, Baylor Scott & White Health.  “Consumers in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Temple and Austin areas will see these kiosks installed at Baylor Scott & White Health locations.”
