How medtech and pharma are responding to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Medtech and pharma companies continue to support Ukraine relief efforts following Russia’s invasion.

Previously, the World Health Organization announced that it was sending “essential medical supplies” to Ukraine — including its first shipment of 36 metric tons of supplies for trauma care and emergency surgery and other health supplies — to meet the needs of more than 150,000 patients. Medical device and pharmaceutical companies have taken various actions for support efforts, ranging from matching employee contributions and sending supplies to suspending operations in the region.

Below is a running list of life science companies and their efforts. This is a developing story and will be updated as companies release information.

3M: Suspending all business in Russia.

Abbott: Donating $2 million to humanitarian organizations to support Ukraine and refugees; donating to International Medical Corps, Americares and Project Hope to deliver emergency and primary healthcare services, supplies and basic needs to the region.

AdvaMed: Working with the U.S. and Ukrainian governments to donate medical supplies to the region; recommendations for needed medical supplies and organizations to donate to, the American Red Cross, Americares, Airline, Good360, International Medical Corps, Project Hope, Save the Children, UNHCR and UNICEF USA.

Bayer: Committed €3 million in humanitarian aid; shipping antibiotics and sterile medical items; matching employee donations; giving cash support to employees in Ukraine.

Boston Scientific: Working to keep colleagues safe in the region to support ongoing access to healthcare; donating to the International Red Cross through Boston Scientific Foundation Europe; matching employee donations to designated organizations to support relief efforts.

Conformis: Suspending all distribution operations and business development in Russia; no longer pursuing future business development opportunities in Russia.

Fujifilm Holdings America: Donating $2 million to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, including $1 million to support humanitarian efforts and $1 million in medical equipment.

Henry Schein: Opening 2022 Disaster Relief Fund through Henry Schein Cares Foundation with an initial $50,000 donation; matching employee contributions up to $25,000; providing $250,000 worth of products to humanitarian aid organizations.

Honeywell: Suspending all sales, distribution and service activities in Russia and Belarus.

Innovative Health Sciences: Providing 1,000 unique portable, non-electric IV pumps to victims of the Ukraine conflict.

Johnson & Johnson: Donating $5 million to support International Rescue Committee and International Federation Red Cross and Red Crescent to provide medical supplies; matching employee contributions to Global Giving Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund.

Medicom: Sending $250,000 worth of medical products from North America and Europe; launching fundraiser for employees and matching contributions; donating all fundraiser proceeds to Doctors Without Borders and to improve access to healthcare in the region.

Medtronic: Providing aid to employees and families in the entire affected area through Medtronic Employee Assistance Program; facilitating resources to assist those relocating to other countries and those who chose to stay and shelter; activated emergency humanitarian aid in Ukraine through international relief organizations for emergency medical supplies; Medtronic Foundation matching employee contributions 2:1.

Novartis: Donating $3 million to support Ukraine humanitarian assistance at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Save the Children and International Rescue Committee; ongoing financial support and medicine donations to Ukraine.

Pfizer: Maintaining a humanitarian supply of medicines to Russia; donating all proceeds to providing direct humanitarian support to Ukraine; no longer initiating clinical trials and stopping patient recruitment in ongoing clinical trials in Russia.

Philips: Providing support to Ukraine through its non-profit organization Philips Foundation, including hospital relief, support for acute and emergency care, financial aid and supplies for displaced Ukrainians; setting up a 24-bed mobile hospital; matching collective contributions through Philips Foundation.

Roche: Supporting employees and families in Ukraine, ensuring critical medicines and diagnostics are available; donating 150,000 packages of Rocephin.

Siemens Healthineers: Donating €1 million for immediate relief and to support Ukrainian families who are seeking refuge; matching employee contributions.
