12. Teknor Apex
Teknor Apex is touting its medical-grade thermoplastic elastomers at MD&M West this year.
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are made for cold-storage bags and weigh less than comparable film gauges while being able to create thinner products. The company’s Medalist compounds are 70% as dense as PVC and have a specific gravity of 0.90. They also can withstand temperatures as low at -60ºC, 20 degrees lower than PVC.
“Our new TPEs for cold-storage bags and pouches combine the inherent low-temperature toughness of elastomers with the biocompatibility, process ability and cost-performance balance characteristic of all Metalist medical compounds,” Ross van Royen, senior market manager of regulated product at the company, said. “They enable medical manufacturers to achieve weight savings and other economies while still providing the same product performance as standard PVC.”
