Smartmug Teams Up with the Apple Health App to Track Caffeine Consumption

October 23, 2018 By Tierney King

Ember, creator of temperature controlled mugs, or ‘smart mugs,’ announced the release of a new update to the Ember app. Now, after collaborating with the Apple Health app, users can track how much caffeine they have consumed throughout the day.

“The updated Ember app with the Apple Health feature will give consumers a simple, easy way to track their caffeine consumption during the day, in order to make more informed decisions about what they are drinking,” said Clay Alexander, Founder and CEO of Ember, according to PR Newswire. “It’s one more step Ember is taking to provide the best experience for coffee and tea lovers.”

The Ember app allows users to track their caffeine consumption and set a maximum caffeine intake for the day. The app will then send a notification if the set amount has been reached, allowing users to make healthier choices. Users can also use the Health app data to understand how caffeine consumption affects their heart rate and sleep patterns.

The feature works by having users manually enter what they are drinking into the Ember iPhone app, where sensors detect how much liquid is remaining. Then, the data is analyzed and synced with the iOS Health app. Ember and Apple hope their collaboration helps coffee, soda and tea drinkers make better informed decisions by becoming more aware of their daily caffeine intake.
