G4S, an integrated security company, has launched a portable monitoring system for vulnerable patients who have psychiatric disorders or cognitive conditions.
Virtual Patient Watch is a security system that monitors patients and sends out an alarm if someone tries to get out of bed or has behavior that requires immediate medical attention. It is designed to enhance monitoring and security of patients who have psychiatric illnesses or cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“G4S is able to provide both the technology and security staff specifically trained for this environment, unlike any other solution on the market,” said G4S Canada CEO Peter Panaritis in a press release. “It has the potential to deliver significant benefits to customers and patients alike, putting their safety and security first.”
It allows hospitals to monitor more patients from one location. The company suggests that if it is used in combination with trained security teams in a clinical setting, it could reduce healthcare facility costs.
A high-resolution camera with infrared capabilities is set up at a patient’s bedside onto a wheeled, IV-style pole. The camera detects movement from patients who may be leaving their bed or exhibiting erratic behavior and triggers an alarm to alert security or medical staff. A speakerphone system connects the patients and clinical staff who can be alerted for assistance.
The Virtual Patient Watch system connects to a hospital’s existing wireless system and has a backup power source that allows for it to be moved between rooms.
The system was exhibited at the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety on April 23 and expected to be manufactured, distributed and supported throughout North America.
