Bluestar Silicones touting long-term implant silicones

February 7, 2017 By Chris Newmarker

Bluestar-SiliconesBluestar Silicones is at MD&M West in Anaheim, Calif., this week (Booth #2209) to promote its expanded Silbione Biomedical product line for long-term implant applications and its new primerless skin adhesive.

Silbione Biomedical long term implant silicones offer outstanding physicals and lot-to-lot consistency, optimizing product design in an easy-to-process formulation, improving cycle time and part quality. The company has extended its range to include low consistency elastomers available in 25 to 40 ShA hardness. These materials now are available for drug delivery applications, with Drug Master File access available via the U.S. FDA with authorization from Bluestar Silicones.

Bluestar’s Silbione Biomedical silicones are produced and packaged in certified and accredited ISO 8 and ISO 7 clean rooms in York, S.C.   In addition, Bluestar Silicones now offers new smaller packaging options for its liquid silicone rubber materials in 400 ml cartridges and gallon kits.

The company also announces the launch of a new self-bonding soft skin adhesive for wound, scar, transdermal and wearable device applications.  Silbione RT Gel 4645 offers high bond strength to polyurethane files without any primer or surface treatment needed to achieve adhesion, even at low temperatures. This new solution broadens the range of applications to include thermally sensitive substrates and, with optimized cure kinetics, enables improvements in productivity and efficiencies for the coaters resulting in decreased overall costs.  This product joins a full range of soft skin adhesives in varying tack levels and viscosities, including high tack Silbione RT Gel 4642, which enables coaters to achieve improved adhesion levels to the skin at lower coat weights than other materials currently available on the market.

“We are excited to share our expanding capabilities in the healthcare arena and demonstrate our ability to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” says Bob Waitt, market manager for healthcare in North America.  “We take pride in working collaboratively with our customers to provide next generation solutions with the personal touch, raising the bar as to what customers should expect from a silicone partner in the healthcare arena.”

Bluestar Silicones has a 226,000 sq. ft. facility in York, S.C., that includes ISO 8 and ISO 7 clean rooms and enhanced quality systems. The York plant is the company’s global center of excellence for implant-grade silicones.

In addition to LSR and skin adhesives, Bluestar Silicones offers a full range of silicone technologies for the healthcare market including high consistency rubbers, room-temperature vulcanized silicones (RTVs), cushioning gels, dispersions and permanent adhesives for the healthcare market.
