Children’s Hospital Boston has received a $3.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to work on a treatment on a fatal genetic blood disease called Fanconi anemia.
The disease is caused by progressive blood stem cell loss due to an abnormality in DNA repair. As a result, Fanconi anemia patients generally suffer from bone marrow failure, congenital anomalies and a likelihood of developing cancer. People with the rare disease usually die by age 20.
