LAS VEGAS, Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Varian Medical
Systems (NYSE:
VAR) today announced it has received a $21 million order from
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for multiple IntellX®
cargo container screening systems. The order, booked this month,
represents the company’s largest single order for Varian’s IntellX
gantry systems. The IntellX systems will be sited along the US
border, scanning vehicles for both border security and manifest
verification purposes.
“High energy X-ray linear accelerators have proven to be
effective tools for rapid, high-resolution container screening and
the IntellX system combines imaging speed and image quality,
providing faster imaging as well as making the images easier to
analyze,” says Bob Drubka, head of Varian’s Security and Inspection
Products business unit. “Varian is very proud to have been selected
for this important procurement and we look forward to working with
CBP on the successful implementation.”
The IntellX system combines a Linatron® Mi6 dual energy
linear accelerator, which allows enhanced material discrimination
and has the potential for automatic identification of contraband
materials, with a proprietary detection system designed for
scanning high-density cargo.
“We developed the new Mi Linatron series as a smaller and more
cost-competitive system for automatic detection of suspicious
materials hidden in cargo,” adds Bob Drubka. “Governments around
the globe continue to step up security in ports and at border
crossings and this latest order demonstrates the US government’s
commitment to improve security at its borders.”
