2017 ESP Award Winner: NDS ZeroWire Mobile

December 6, 2017 By Daniel Seeger

In the November/December 2017 issue of Surgical Products, the winners of this year’s Excellence In Surgical Products (ESP) Awards are revealed.

Day by day, we’ll also share the results here, including some additional details about the honored products.

Category: OR VISUALIZATION

Winner: NDS ZEROWIRE MOBILE

ZeroWire Mobile is the only medical-grade, battery-powered mobile display stand designed specifically for the surgical environment. Powered by two rechargeable, waterproof, and cleanable batteries, ZeroWire Mobile can power a 32-inch monitor for up to five hours of continuous operation. A visual and audible alarm indicates the need for a quick and easy battery swap from a wall-mounted charging system, with no interruption in power. Elimination of power and video cables allows for ergonomic monitor positioning and a fully untethered visualization system. Extra-large wheels, small-footprint, and adjustability of height and tilt give the user confidence and control in maneuverability throughout the facility.

NDS provided further information on the appeal and benefits of the device.

Why do you think readers are interested in learning more about the product?

The complexities of OR integration are putting more pressure on surgical teams as they strive to work with additional equipment and less space in the OR. New innovations that are designed to save space, reduce cables and wires, enhance the ease of maneuverability, improve room ergonomics, and be easy to use are attracting a lot of interest because they are the way of the future.

What technical innovations does the product encapsulate and apply to the OR?

Since ZeroWire Mobile can power a 32-inch NDS display for up to 5 hours of continuous usage using two re-chargeable and cleanable power modules. This eliminates the power cord and gives the OR staff complete flexibility of positioning the monitor for a given procedure, or moving it during a procedure.

The power modules are easily “hot-swapped”, meaning a depleted power module can be quickly and efficiently replaced with a fresh battery from a convenient wall-charging system, with no loss of power to the monitor.

When used with a wireless video transmission system from NDS, the video cable to the secondary monitor is also eliminated. This creates a very streamlined and highly mobile imaging solution for the OR team.

How does the product contribute to better outcomes?

ZeroWire Mobile is moving imaging beyond the traditional wall-mounted, cart-mounted, and boom-mounted monitor systems. OR teams now have greater flexibility of positioning and re-positioning of monitors to the surgeon’s immediate needs.

With less cables and wires to clean and maintain, room turnaround times may be enhanced, allowing for potentially more efficient workflow.

ZeroWire Mobile can also be quickly and efficiently re-located from room to room throughout the facility, helping to bring wireless video connectivity where and when it is required.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Power modules are sealed, easily cleanable, and rechargeable. Extra-large casters enhance the ease of maneuverability. Small footprint allows the product to fit well into a busy procedure room.
