Complications after bariatric surgery occurred significantly more often in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but rates remained low, authors of a cohort study concluded.
The complication rate increased with CKD severity, from 4.6 percent in patients with normal kidney function or stage 1 CKD to 9.9 percent for patients with stage 5 CKD.
In a multivariate analysis, the hazard for complications increased by 30 percent for each higher CKD stage.
But whether the benefits of the surgery outweigh the risks in patients with CKD remains unclear, the authors wrote in an article published online in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
