Olympus Brings The THUNDERBEAT

May 2, 2017 By Daniel Seeger

Olympus has delivered many innovations in the realm of electrosurgical products. In recent years, the one that has perhaps generated the most interest is the THUNDERBEAT, notable for its unique combination Ultrasonic and Advanced BiPolar energies that provide sealing and cutting capabilities in a single device.

To learn more about the THUNDERBEAT, Surgical Products interviewed Manisha Shah-Bugaj, Executive Director of Marketing – Energy for Olympus.

What can you tell us about the THUNDERBEAT?

The Olympus Surgical Energy Portfolio provides our valued customers with innovative, efficient, and economical electrosurgical technology solutions that make it easier for surgeons and hospitals to operate at their best. The breadth of Olympus’ Energy portfolio allows facilities to provide clinicians with access to premium technologies critical to complex procedures, while also offering economic and clinically effective devices for standard, high volumes cases.

The Olympus Universal Surgical Energy Generator (EPF-1) eliminates the need for multiple generator platforms in the hospital — streamlining workflow and limiting staff training requirements by integrating the most common forms of energy into a single platform. THUNDERBEAT is our high-impact, premium hybrid technology that provides additional vessel sealing when required for 7mm with procedural efficiency for more complex procedures.

What major advantages will surgeons notice when using the THUNDERBEAT?

THUNDERBEAT maximizes performance and value by offering reliable 7mm sealing, best-in-class speed, and the functionality of multiple surgical instruments in a single device. In addition to reliable and rapid vessel sealing, it also precisely dissects, grasps, and manipulates tissue to enhance efficiency during surgical procedures.

How does the device response to specific needs that have been identified by surgeons?

For clinical situations that demand greater performance and value compared to conventional advanced energy devices, THUNDERBEAT is the optimal choice because of its combination hybrid technology. It combines both reliable 7mm vessel sealing with rapid and precise dissection capabilities.

What support does Olympus provide for surgeons considering the adoption of the device?

In addition to our local sales representation, Olympus has a team of clinical specialists that are available to help in-service, train, and support surgeons during the adoption and use of this new technology. Through Olympus’s Professional Education team, we also offer a wide variety of educational opportunities through Master Classes, Clinical Mentorships, and Proctorships.

Anything else you’d like to add?

We understand that surgeons and hospitals are constantly striving to deliver improved outcomes and specialized care to their patients. To help in that effort, the Olympus Surgical Energy Portfolio consists of cutting edge devices that deliver truly unique value and utility to those who purchase and use them. It is our goal to meet the universal goals of healthcare reform to improve clinical outcomes, reduce overall costs, and enhance quality of life for patients. Our product offerings allow surgeons to choose the optimal energy when and where it is needed most, so that they can deliver the best possible outcome for their patients.

In today’s healthcare environment, we also know that the innovation we seek and portfolio of products we provide must be delivered in an economically feasible manner. The Olympus Surgical Energy Platform offers a unique blend of products which allows surgeons to assess the needs of the individual patient and choose the appropriate energy device, while at the same time allowing hospitals to recognize significant cost reductions. Our blend of premium and economic solutions creates the environment for surgeons and hospitals to work together to achieve value and quality.
