The Joint Commission and AABB announced a partnership Dec. 3 that will provide a joint hospital certification program for patient blood management. Facilities are interested in this voluntary certification, which is based on the AABB Standard for a Patient Blood Management Program, will be able to participate in early 2016.
The partnership stated: “An evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach to optimizing the care of patients who might need transfusion, Patient Blood Management encompasses all aspects of patient evaluation and clinical management surrounding the transfusion decision-making process. It can reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusions and reduce health care costs, while ensuring that blood components are available for the patients who need them.”
