Villafaña founded several device developers that were acquired by major OEMs: Cardiac Pacemakers Inc. (CPI, purchased by Boston Scientific for $27 billion), St. Jude Medical (purchased by Abbott for $30 billion) and ATS Medical (purchased by Medtronic for $400 million). He also founded laser-enhanced angioplasty system developer GV Medical and Kips Bay Medical, which developed a nitinol saphenous vein graft device for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
This webinar series is focused on medical device engineering and R&D featuring live, one-on-one webinar interviews with industry experts by editors from Arrowfly’s medical device brands — Medical Design & Outsourcing and Device Talks — and Q&A sessions with our audience.
This series is primarily meant for medical device developers, manufacturers and suppliers involved in minimally invasive technologies like surgical robotics, catheters, imaging, implants and the materials, components and manufacturing processes that make them possible. This series is also helpful for students and engineers outside of medtech who are considering joining this life-saving industry, as well as any engineering/R&D professionals in any industry who would like to learn about mission-critical innovation.

Then, on Aug. 20, DeviceTalks Editorial Director Tom Salemi will sit down with LEM Surgical CEO Yossi Bar for a discussion on autonomous surgical robotics, what will it take to get there and what surgical field will lead.
Registration is free and open now here for all three sessions.

Villafaña willl share lessons from his long career about medical device innovation, R&D and regulatory strategy, and understanding unmet needs to help other device developers identify opportunities for innovation.
Each day’s webinar runs from 9-10 a.m. Pacific time/11-noon Central/1-2 Eastern and will include a Q&A session with our live webinar audience. When you register here, you should be able to sign up for all three events at the same time and easily add invites to your calendar.
Registrants will also have access to transcripts from previous interviews with minimally invasive R&D experts.

The MDO Min-Vasive Medtech webinar series returns Aug. 18-20, 2026. Register now for free to save your seat.
Last year, we featured device development experts from Edwards Lifesciences, Jupiter Endo and Compremium, and the year before we had Abbott, Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s DePuy Synthes, Synchron and Endiatx.
This annual series is just one part of our year-round coverage of minimally invasive medical devices and procedures and the technologies that make them possible, such as next-gen catheters, imaging and robotics and advanced materials like nitinol and bioabsorbable polymers.
This year’s MDO Min-Vasive Medtech series is sponsored by Medical Design & Outsourcing partners who help major medical device OEMs and groundbreaking startups get new and improved products to physicians and patients:
- Aerotech
- Argon Medical Devices
- Arrotek
- Confluent
- Jabil Heathcare
- New England Wire Technologies
- Viant
- Innova Engineered Plastics
Hope to see you there!
