Nominee: GT Medical Technologies’ GammaTile
“By getting a head STaRT on fighting the tumor, resection plus GammaTile Therapy can extend local recurrence-free survival with minimal complications, reduced patient burden, and assured compliance,” the company said.
GT Medical was founded by five Barrow Neurological Institute researchers who worked with IsoRay (now called Perspective Therapeutics) to develop the GammaTile technology using Cesium-131 radiation seeds embedded in a collagen tile designed to be placed in surgical margins at the time of surgery. (An interesting note about IsoRay is that its Richland, Washington, headquarters is near the historic Hanford site, established to manufacture plutonium for the Manhattan Project.)
The FDA gave GammaTile technology 510(k) clearance in 2018.
